Double cross by ben macintyre6/28/2023 (I’d been reporting about plastic for a while – watch for a cover story coming up, or this graphic explainer.)The girls were in.We collected our reusable shopping bags and jars, and drove (I know, I know) to the local food co-op. And while I tell myself that one day these contests may evolve into pro-social habits, mostly I like them because they seem to work, my girls are happy, and I scratch one or two things off the never-ending to-do list. So when I read climate scientist Peter Kalmus’ 2017 book, “Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution,” I was intrigued. Among many other things, his book proposes personal behavior shifts – using only cash, eschewing industrial beverages, avoiding all packaging – often beginning as a week- or monthlong personal challenge. Over breakfast, I outlined our mission: For a week, I said, we were going to shop without buying any plastic. I have set up contests for making beds and tending the litter box, running soccer drills and practicing instruments. The week began, as do all good weeks with my children, with an official challenge. A family’s competitive streak, after all, can be magically exploited for parental gain.

The wump world6/28/2023 His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know.”At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well. As he himself noted, “I write about animals because I love to draw them. In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT’S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin.

Isaac asimov foundation series6/28/2023 He died in 1992 but other authors have, with the blessing of the Asimov estate, written works set in the Foundation universe. Then in the 1980s, Asimov started adding books to the sequence – two prequels and two sequels. A professor of biochemistry at Boston University and the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he had been inspired by Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, as well as Arnold Toynbee's theories about cycles of history. With them, Asimov wanted to portray the fall of some great future civilisation. But now the "unfilmable" has finally been filmed and this week an adaptation of Foundation starring Jared Harris and Lee Pace premieres on Apple TV+.įoundation began as a series of short stories in Astounding Science Fiction magazine in the 1940s and eventually became a trilogy of books published in the 1950s. Indeed, the writing of it spanned half a century. There have been several attempts to bring Foundation to the screen, but the series of books was long held to be unfilmable because the saga weaves together so many plotlines and spans centuries.

Whilst I can see they were trying to set up the feel of a by-gone era, for me, it doesn’t draw the reader into the ‘mystery’ like it should. It makes it seem a little silly and shallow, which isn’t the story at all. I actually think this doesn’t do justice to the book. WONDER at the daring theft of the priceless CLOCKWORK SPARROW! TREMBLE as the most DASTARDLY criminals in London enact their wicked plans! GASP as our bold heroines, Miss Sophie Taylor and Miss Lilian Rose, CRACK CODES, DEVOUR ICED BUNS and vow to bring the villains to justice… You are cordially invited to attend the Grand Opening of Sinclair’s department store!Įnter a world of bonbons, hats, perfumes and MYSTERIES around every corner. I have already ordered, The Mystery of the Jewelled Moth, book two in the series and book three, T he Mystery of the Painted Dragon, is due next month. The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow was published in 2015 but it has a wonderfully old-fashioned feel. Everything about it is special: the gold highlights on it’s cover, the lyrical writing style, not forgetting the unique story itself. OK, first things first – I loved this book. Cat Stories by Diana Secker Tesdell6/28/2023 … But Andrew and I liked to take weekend trips, and after she came to live with us we often took Pink along. Unlike Lucy, the feline the couple previously owned, Pink had been pretty distinguished from the beginning, making her owners feel like it was their privilege to have her with them! So The Islands is full of Pink’s antics which had many laugh out loud moments! Pink is a small gray partial Manx, “a tail-less wonder,” with beautiful stripes below its neck which looked like necklaces. It’s a funny little story about a cat named Pink the narrator adopted with her late husband, Andrew. This collection begins with Alice Adams’ The Islands. So I thought spending time reading Cat Stories would do me good – I miss having fur balls running around the house! I owned cats growing up, although unfortunately, our current apartment policy doesn’t allow pets. A new short story collection to start the new month! □ After rummaging through my Everyman’s Library Pocket Classics Series pile, I picked Cat Stories curated by Diana Secker Tesdell (who also put together Love Stories), as I adore cats.

The trial and death of socrates book6/27/2023 I’d already reviewed Mary Shelley: The Eternal Dream, and while that book left much to be desired, I couldn’t wait to read Socrates. A look back at some of the greatest historical figures, in graphic novel form-what better way to spend the evening after a long day of work? The Comixology Originals series, featuring five translated biographical graphic novels from Becco Giallo, is an intriguing prospect for me. Socrates Alessandro Ranghiasci (Artist), Francesco Barilli (Writer), Giulia Gabrielli (Letters), Lucy Lenzi (Translator) Why did Athens, the seat of democracy, condemn a man widely regarded as one of its ‘greatest citizens’? Socrates chronicles the philosopher’s trial in 399 BC and his eventual demise.
