Songs of innocence and experience6/24/2023 ![]() Considering that the Songs were written during the Industrial Revolution, and many children were subjected to abuse and child labor, it’s very possible that the child on the cloud is the piper’s muse, who helps him understand that he must be the voice of those who cannot speak for themselves: the deceased, the lower class, the children, and those more who were struggling due to the Industrial Revolution. Starting with Introduction, there are many possible interpretations of this poem. Many of the Songs are written in pairs, thus the problems are seen in two different lenses: one through the innocence of childhood, and then the experience of adulthood. These poems collocate the innocence of childhood against the world of adulthood, a world full of repression and corruption. Despite its simple images of children, flowers, animals, and an off-putting “happy” vibe, the Songs are troubling and reflect Blake’s deeply held personal and spiritual beliefs. ![]() Together, Blake explores ‘the two contrary states of the human soul,’ as he had put in the subtitle. ![]() Songs of Innocence and Experience is a collection of poems by William Blake, published in 1789. ![]()

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Sybella and Genevieve have brilliant skills-killing, scheming, spying, protecting, and sometimes finding Mortain’s grace-but everyone who holds power abuses it terribly. Meanwhile, Genevieve, another assassin/daughter of Mortain, languishes in an undercover placement in France, instruction-less-so she builds herself a plan. Having changed the nature of death (incomprehensibly) in Mortal Heart (2014), LaFevers ignores that and focuses on Sybella’s doubt about how to serve her father, Mortain-the god of Death-without the black marques that previously showed her whom to kill. The duchess promises, when queen, to protect Sybella’s young sisters from their brother’s house, where the men molested Sybella ( Dark Triumph, 2013). Sybella, a trained assassin, escorts Brittany’s duchess to France to marry King Charles. History, intrigue, and peril in 15th-century Brittany and France. ![]()

Circle of friends by maeve binchy6/24/2023 ![]() I get why they were culled (I would have cut them too) but I missed them. ![]() Their businesses slowly build throughout the novel and you root for them to do well, especially as Clodagh and Fonsie are such warm and charismatic characters. This is the kind of book that (as well as making you want to run off to buy some vintage 50's clothes) makes you want to start up your own business, and that's due to a storyline that sees the young people of Knockglen - Clodagh, the niece of the lady who runs the dress shop and Fonsie, son to the chip shop owner - trying to make the town more modern. We don't see Nan's family background, which is vitally important in the way it informs her character and Jack has morphed into a stereo-typical leading man.Īlso, in focusing solely on Benny's story, we lose out on one of my favourite threads in the novel - the renovation of Knockglen. The characters of the book are much more complicated - Binchy made me like Nan, and even Jack, despite how terrible they were - but the film doesn't give either of them much room for development. ![]() The narrative instead focuses on Benny's romance with Jack and her troubles with Sean Walsh. In the adaptation - written by Andrew Davies and starring Minnie Driver - Eve is assigned to the 'best friend' role and most of her storyline is cut. ![]()

![]() ![]() Shortly before that he had become the de facto ruler of Flanders. When the resistance seemed hopeless Robert allowed himself to be taken prisoner, together with his father and his brother William of Crèvecoeur, and taken to the French King (May 1300). Guy of Dampierre broke all feudal bonds with the French king (on 20 January 1297) mainly under his influence. After his return from the Crusade he continued to be a loyal aid for his father, politically and militarily, in the fight against the attempts of the French King Philip IV the Fair to add Flanders to the French crown lands. Together with his father he took part in 1270 in the Eighth Crusade, led by Saint Louis. Robert of Béthune gained military fame in Italy, when he fought at the side of his father-in-law, Charles I of Sicily (1265–1268) against the last Hohenstaufens, Manfred and Conradin. Both father and son were taken into captivity in May 1300, and Robert was not released until 1305. His father essentially transferred the reign of Flanders to him in November 1299, during his war with Philip IV of France. No more excuses devotional6/22/2023 ![]() Your position became your inheritance when you gave your heart to Christ. Each time you stand and proclaim the promises of God on your behalf, you are taking your position. So, you must not stop talking about them every moment: in your car, when you are having your shower, and everywhere, declare your position. You were also given precious and better promises which are your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on the world. A prayer for owen meany6/21/2023 ![]() Rather, Owen believes he acted as God's instrument. Owen's foul ball comes fairly early in the story, as does his admission he doesn't believe in accidents. Irving tells the story firsthand through Johnny Wheelwright, flipping back and forth between current day ("current" - the book was published in 1989) and the early '50s. The book opens, "I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice - not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God I am a Christian because of Owen Meany."
